Blockchain’s potential in forest offsets, the voluntary carbon markets and REDD+

چکیده

Summary Increasing net-zero commitments by individuals, companies and governments have been accompanied the growth of voluntary offset market, including Reducing Emissions from Deforestation Forest Degradation (REDD+). Technologies, notably blockchain, are starting to enter REDD+ space may potential address issues such as additionality, permanence, leakage property community rights. In this Perspective, we first examine markets role forest carbon offsets played within them, highlighting evolution that hindered its development. We then blockchain each issues, using literature emerging experience use in forestry space. find technology improve verifiability, reduce transaction costs and, a lesser degree, aid addressing additionality permanence concerns. However, greater learning pilot projects is needed fully assess maximize potential.

Explaining the Price of Voluntary Carbon Offsets

This paper identifies factors that explain the large variability in the price of voluntary carbon offsets. We estimate hedonic price functions using a variety of providerand project-level characteristics as explanatory variables. We find that providers located in Europe sell offsets at prices that are approximately 30% higher than providers located in either North America or Australasia. Contra...

Scenarios in tropical forest degradation: carbon stock trajectories for REDD+

BACKGROUND Human-caused disturbance to tropical rainforests-such as logging and fire-causes substantial losses of carbon stocks. This is a critical issue to be addressed in the context of policy discussions to implement REDD+. This work reviews current scientific knowledge about the temporal dynamics of degradation-induced carbon emissions to describe common patterns of emissions from logging a...

Response to Defra consultation on voluntary carbon offsets

It stifles NGOs efforts to ensure that voluntary carbon offsets make a serious contribution to sustainable development, which the CDM currently fails to do; It promotes institutional monopoly (putting all eggs in the UNFCCC basket) at a time when a sensible approach to global climate policy suggests that institutional diversity is valuable; The appellation “code of best practice” suggests a lev...

Accounting for risk in valuing forest carbon offsets

BACKGROUND Forests can sequester carbon dioxide, thereby reducing atmospheric concentrations and slowing global warming. In the U.S., forest carbon stocks have increased as a result of regrowth following land abandonment and in-growth due to fire suppression, and they currently sequester approximately 10% of annual US emissions. This ecosystem service is recognized in greenhouse gas protocols a...
